Bridges Out Of Poverty Workshop

Bridges out of Poverty is a unique and powerful tool bringing awareness to the "hidden rules" which govern many aspects of life for the poor. Bridges reaches out to the millions of service providers and businesses whose daily work connects them with the lives of people in poverty. In joining us, you'll find specific solutions that you and your organization can implement right now to help bring hope and opportunity into your sphere of influence!

Catching on to Computers

If you or your family member is interested in learning more about how to navigate a computer, use Microsoft Word, and surf the Internet, call The SOURCE to sign up for our basic computers class. Classes run every Thursday for three weeks and begin the first Thursday of every month.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes

Small class instruction helps students learn or improve English, regardless of their primary spoken language. This class is open to employees of member companies and is led by the Kent County Literacy Council.

Financial Literacy Classes

Presented by Flagstar Bank and The SOURCE, these 12 week financial literacy classes focus on many essential banking topics, such as: Introduction to Bank Services, Borrowing Basics, Introduction to Credit, How to Choose and Keep a Checking account, and much more!

Eligible program participants may open a Personal Development Savings Account where, during the course of the classes, Flagstar Bank will match 50 cents to every dollar. That means you could save up to $300! Also, as a SOURCE member employee you will receive a $25 Meijer or Spartan gift card if you attend 80% or more of the classes!

Financial Management Classes

This class will help individuals develop and improve skills in money managemet, budgeting, and long-term financial planning. Small class size allows for more personal assistance. This class is free for employees of SOURCE companies with a SOURCE referral and are offered by and located at The Inner City Christian Federation.

Free Income Tax Preparation

For the fifth straight year, The SOURCE is providing free income tax preparation assistance for single adult or two adult families with one or more child that earned $40,000/year and single individuals and families with no dependants that earned less than $22,000/year. Tax returns are filed electronically, so you will have your money as quickly as possible. Starting Monday, January 28th, The SOURCE will be open to prepare taxes BY APPOINTMENT each Monday evening from 6-9pm and every Saturday morning from 9am-noon. We have qualified volunteer professionals that are specifically trained to help you get every possible tax credit for which you qualify. This service is free of charge and we would like to serve the employees and families of SOURCE member companies as well as the general public. Introduction to Home Ownership Classes

This 6 hour class teaches participants how to prepare for home ownership, how to shop for a home, the advantages of home ownership, what to expect during the mortgage process, and low cost ways to get into home ownership. There is a $5 cost associated with the class for members of the public, which must be paid in advance upon registration. This class is free for employees of SOURCE companies with a SOURCE referral. Child care is available during evening and Saturday classes for children ages 2 and older. Introduction to Home Ownership is offered by and located at The Inner City Christian Federation. Orientation

The "Hidden Rules" orientation is a two hour session based on the curriculum developed by Dr. Ruby Payne in A Framework for Understanding Poverty. Orientations may be scheduled at The SOURCE or on site at member companies.

Spanish for Neighbors I

Spanish for Neighbors I is an introductory Spanish class designed for individuals who have had little to no exposure to the Spanish language. This class teaches students basic conversational Spanish, including basic vocabulary and sentence structure. There is a $35 charge for the class, which includes a book that students may keep. Classes run for 8 weeks.

Priority is given to employees of SOURCE member companies and their family members. Registration for the general public begins on Monday, June 16, 2008. Please call The SOURCE at (616) 452-5295 for additional registration information.

Spanish for Neighbors II

This intermediate class is designed for individuals who are already familiar with basic Spanish vocabulary, sentence structure, and the alphabet. There is a $35 charge for the class, which includes a book that students may keep. Classes run for 8 weeks.
